NASA is primarily a space research/exploration organization But they do use Air Force pilots for their missions, simply because the USAF pilots have the discipline and training they need for spacecraft. Most of the astronauts had military pilot training, but more than 99% of the NASA employees are not astronauts. ADDED: I would guess that the balance in NASA between former military and those with no military experience at all is roughly equivalent to any private aerospace engineering firm.
